My Midterm Mini Project
My midterm mini project was an essay on how Shamsie's adapted storyline and tweaked characters present the conflict between law and justice in a contemporary manner while showing the influence today's society has in this millennia old struggle. Although this wasn't my first time writing a literary analysis piece, it was my first time writing one in my college career. I always felt that literary analysis was hard in high school because we never dove into the text as much as we do in our current cultures and ideas class – this really helps with seeing beneath the surface of the text and gives new ideas on literary analysis as a whole.
In the beginning, I thought that my literary analysis essay would be focused around how Shamsie's edits to Antigone's original storyline and characters better contextualizes the conflict between justice and the law in our world today. My peers provided substantial feedback on the structure of my essay, but I felt the most significant part was when I realized that my argument needed to be more focused, which led to the rest of my essay falling together. During my office hour meeting with Prof. Burnham, I realized that in order to really boost the substance of my argument I had to make a statement and show what the effects of Shamsie 'better contextualizing Antigone's story' have on the struggle between law and justice. This was a big turning point for me as it gave me a sharper direction and more focused point to write upon. I was able to really present a unique view of the intertextuality between Home Fire and Antigone, which would not have been possible without this realignment.
I like your discussion of how your essay changed and improved through feedback and conversation. This is an underestimated part of the writing process--it's very important!
