My Final Project - Initial Thoughts

To be honest, I haven't really begun thinking about my final project. This week marked the passing of my first wave of midterms, and it felt to cruise through with (relatively) less work. However, I know for a fact that my favorite text till now that I have read in the class is definitely Home Fire. I also am quite confident that even though I want to try out Neatline at least for one assignment, I probably won't bring myself to try using it for the final project. I'll most likely be using Neatline for a research excursion in the future.

I'm sure that I want to explore a topic centered around Home Fire, mainly because I felt that I could most relate to this novel due to it being set in the present day (around 2015). Antigone was also quite interesting, but it seemed a little distant, being set over 2000 years ago in Ancient Greece. Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, on the other hand, was a story unlike one I had read before, but the overall language and style of the translation made it hard to fully understand and develop a liking toward. For my final project, I would like to explore other modern day adaptations of Ancient Greek plays. I feel that knowing a novel is adapted from an ancient play or story gives a deeper insight into why the author structured their novel the way they did. I'd like to explore this further, especially looking into the changes the plays underwent when being written into the structure of their contemporary adaptations.

  1. I also feel like it's too early to be thinking about finals because midterms were just a week or two ago. I think you have a good topic to explore, as Greek theater has definitely had an impact across the globe.

  2. That's a great topic if you decide to stick with it. I'd be fascinated to learn from you about what contemporary pieces are actually adaptations, and I'm sure you'll make some discoveries that are surprising.

  3. That's a really interesting topic. The key will be to see whether there are adaptations from a variety of locations around the globe, as well as different time periods. Definitely worth pursuing.
