Equiano Research Excursions

I was very intrigued by Katie's Neatline exhibit on slave ship shipwrecks, and I learned a lot about the significance of these shipwrecks and what they uncover about what used to happen on ships associated with the trans Atlantic slave trade over the course of 300 years. I found the pictures in the exhibit to be especially interesting, including those of artifacts, such as ballast bars used to hold down slaves, found onboard the sunken ships. I was also unaware of the extent to which Brazil's economy was dependent on slaves (40% of all slaves were in Brazil).

I also looked at Rian's Timeline JS on Quakers and abolitionism, which I thought was a great way to get a better sense of the role the Quakers had to play in the Abolitionist movement and how it gained traction in the American colonies at the time. I really liked the visuals that accompanied each timeline event – overall this exhibition only well informed me on Quakers and their contributions to the Abolitionist movement in the Americas but also gave me a bit more confidence to use Timeline JS for a future project as well.
