Symposium Thoughts

This was my first time attending any event specifically related to print and print history. I had no idea that printing using a physical press is such a complex process, and for many, a tradition that runs in the family. Additionally, I also never realized that printing is not just an activity, but also an art form for those who practice it. I also found the pictures of the physical presses that were shown very interesting as well, since the machine was much bigger than I had imagined.

Although this isn't directly related to print, it was a part of the Symposium, so I'd like to mention how Lillian-Yvonne Bertram used the Python programming language to manipulate the text in her poem, allowing for people to see the same subject from different perspectives. As a Computer Science and Engineering major, I found the intersection between programming and poetry quite interesting, especially the functions and logic behind the code that she shared with the audience. Overall, I really was amazed by how Lillian-Yvonne Bertram was able to utilize technology to add another dimension to the meaning behind poetry. Thank you Prof. Burnham for giving us the chance to attend this wonderful event.

  1. Dr. Bertram's combination of poetry and programming was my favorite part of the symposium, but I know absolutely nothing about computers or Python, so it's interesting to read your perspective as a comp sci major.

  2. I was really surprised to learn how Dr. Bertram used such a modern and evolved technology to help her produce her prints. It really shows how it's become more of an art form rather than just "printing" texts.

  3. I like your comment about it not being just an activity, but an art form. This was definitely emphasized as Johnathan expressed the excitement & nerves of waiting to see if the final product came out the way he / his students intended. It's an artistic experience

  4. I also commented on the uniqueness of Dr. Bertram's work! It was cool to see how a very structured field could be combined with poems to create art.

  5. The intersection of printmaking and modern technology is so fascinating, I highly recommend exploring the different interdisciplinary mediums people have created with it on google, there's some really impressive work there!

  6. I also found the use of python pretty interesting as I use it for data analytics in finance and economics. Good post!
